Leucrocuta

Description  The size of a donkey, and features that are between a stag and a lion, with cloven hoofs. Has a rigid backbone, and cannot look behind itself. Has a wide mouth, and one tooth bone that extends all the way around its mouth, with no gums.

 

Features  Can produce the voices of humans. It is the offspring of a male Hyena, and a lioness.

 

Also called  Leucrota, Crocuta, Corocotta, Rosomacha, Akabo, Alazbo, Zabo, Lupus vesperitinus

 

Might be  Hyena.  There is a lot of confusion in the literature

 

Described By: Pliny- "The swiftest of all wild beasts, about the size of an ass, with a stag's haunches, a lion's neck, tail and breast, badger's head, cloven hoof, mouth opening right back to the ears, and ridges of bone in place of rows of teeth- this animal is reported to imitate the voices of human beings."

 Topsell- believed it was the same animal as the Manticora.
