Panotti
Detail from the Hereford MappaMundi
Pliny tells of an area off of Scythia called the "All-Ears Islands" where the natives have large ears that cover their whole bodies, which are otherwise left naked. Pomponius Mela places them near the region of the Orkney Islands, living on an island with the Oeonae (who eat only oats and marsh bird eggs) and the Hippopodes (who have horse feet.) Isidore of Seville tells of the Panotti of Scythia who have ears so large that they can cover their whole body with them. The name in Greek means "all ears."
